The occurrence of specific sedimentary rock types can be used to reconstruct past plate tectonic settings. Since the onset of plate tectonics ~2.0 Ga, most of the planet's igneous activity has concentrated along plate boundaries. Both calcite and dolomite may occur in phosphorites, and dolomite may be particularly abundant. Under geologic conditions where downward circulating groundwaters move through mafic volcanic rocks, significant amounts of Ca, Mg, and Fe can be supplied by alteration of these rocks.

Primary sedimentary structures occur in response to flow regime which represents the range of energy conditions that transport sediment. Particles are important in determining the type of clastic rocks, and these particles range from fine-grained sediments, such as silt and clay, to coarse-grained such as boulders. Well-rounded quartzite rocks from on top of the Gravelly Range, southwest Montana. (From Oard et al., 73 p. 85).
